A few years ago I was trying to teach my children some lessons on responsibility and how to clean. One of their jobs was to clean the hall bathroom. We had a pail with cleaning supplies that I kept in the bathroom to make it easy on them. One day one of the kids woke up and came to me sick with a headache. She wasn’t running a fever so I had her stay in my room as I went to get a pain reliever to give her. As I was doing so another two children came in also not feeling well and with headaches. I gave them medicine just hoping we weren’t coming down with the flu.
As I walked them back to their rooms to have them lay back down I could smell an unfamiliar odor coming from the hall. I went into the bathroom and found that when they had cleaned the day before the kid that had used the Clorox spray had just left the rag, damp with cleaner, in the supply pail. Unfortunately, the child that had cleaned with the ammonia-based glass cleaner had done the same thing. Those two rags, both damp with chemicals, had been piled together all night resulting in noxious fumes that made my family ill and could have been much worse. After that incident, I became much more aware of the chemicals in my home.
Why I Chose RetroFoam Injection Foam For My Home
When we chose to have our home injected with RetroFoam injection foam one of the things I looked at was the impact that would have on my family. I had heard horror stories of the noxious fumes that hung around after spray foaming and not being able to be in the house for 24-48 hours after application due to off-gassing. I found out that RetroFoam is a very different product. It is one of the greenest products on the market. The list of attributes is impressive.
- Made of nitrogen-based organic polymers
- Contains no solvents or petro-chemicals
- No odor
- No CFC’s
- No ozone-depleting off-gassing
- It’s a pollution prevention alternative for rigid foam board
- Leaves no residue after incineration
I Was Able to Stay In My Home During The Entire Installation Process
I was impressed. There are not a lot of products out there that can do the job of air-sealing, insulating, and even sound-dampening with so little environmental impact. I am very happy that I didn’t have to worry about what was going into the walls of my home. I was able to be in my home the entire time of the installation. The foam is an inert material and I watched the crew clean up with water and a shop vac. There were no fumes, no dust, it was just amazing.
My Home is More Energy-Efficient
Added to that my home is now more energy efficient. It makes me feel good knowing I am using less electricity due to less stress on my HVAC system so I’m saving money on my energy bills. I now get to enjoy my home more. My home is healthier with less air leakage, pollens, and allergens. It’s quieter due to the sound deadening properties of the foam and the rooms are more comfortable temperatures. I also like knowing that it’s not going to be a toxic mess years down the road.
Now I have no real desire to be an activist or eco-warrior, however, I believe we each have a responsibility to take care of the things we’ve been entrusted with. Our stewardship if you will. For me, that’s the land I live on and raise my garden and my chickens, my home, and most especially my children. I am grateful to have the peace of mind that I am keeping all of that as healthy as possible. It turns out sometimes it’s pretty easy to go green.
